Nikita Kering’: The Kenyan Voice Growing Into an African Music Powerhouse

—

From performing before large audiences as a child to winning major continental awards, Nikita Kering’ has built her career around expressive songwriting, vocal excellence and the confidence to keep evolving.

Kenyan audiences first encountered Nikita Kering’ as a gifted child with a remarkably powerful voice.

They have since watched her grow into an accomplished singer, songwriter and performer whose music is gaining recognition across Africa.

Her journey is not simply about discovering talent at a young age. It is about developing that talent with patience, surviving discouragement and becoming increasingly confident in the artist she wants to be.

A Voice Discovered Early

Nikita began performing publicly as a child.

One of her earliest major appearances came during gospel musician Emmy Kosgei’s album launch. Kosgei became an important mentor, helping the young singer develop her confidence and understand the demands of a professional music career.

Nikita continued balancing school, rehearsals, recording and public performances.

She has spoken about being bullied by classmates because of her commitment to music. Rather than allowing those experiences to silence her ambitions, she remained focused on developing her craft.

Her professional breakthrough arrived with the release of “Happy With You” in 2018. That year, she received the Pulse Music Video Award for Best New Artist, establishing herself as one of Kenya’s most promising young voices.

Recognition Across Africa

At 17, Nikita won two honours at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards—Best Female Artist in Eastern Africa and Revelation of the African Continent.

She returned to AFRIMA in 2021 and received two additional awards: Best Female Artist in Eastern Africa and Best Artist in African R&B and Soul.

Her continental success continued in September 2026 when she won Best Female East Africa at the African Muzik Magazine Awards—AFRIMMA—in Dallas.

The achievement was especially significant because she emerged as the only Kenyan winner at the ceremony, representing the country in a competitive field of leading East African performers.

While AFRIMA and AFRIMMA are separate awards organizations, Nikita’s recognition from both demonstrates the consistent continental appeal of her work.

Nikita’s music combines R&B, soul, Afro-pop and contemporary African influences.

Her expressive voice remains central to her appeal, but her artistry is equally defined by emotional honesty. Her songs explore love, disappointment, desire, confidence and the process of discovering oneself.

Her catalogue includes popular songs such as “Ex,” “Last Name,” “Kama Hauna,” “Dilly Darling” and “Niwache.”

She has also collaborated with artists including Khaligraph Jones, BNXN, Young Stunna, Scar Mkadinali, Ndovu Kuu and Sofiya Nzau.

Her participation in the Coke Studio Africa remix of “Traboski” alongside BNXN and Young Stunna helped introduce her to an even wider African audience.

A Bolder Chapter With The Lick Back

Released in May 2026, Nikita’s five-track EP The Lick Back represents a more self-assured phase of her career.

The project contains thoughts and emotions she had previously struggled to express openly. Its music reflects an artist who is no longer only demonstrating her vocal ability, but also taking greater ownership of her image, message and creative direction.

That independence extends beyond music.

Official apparel connected to The Lick Back suggests that Nikita is developing the project as a wider artist and lifestyle brand. It reflects the growing role of creative entrepreneurship in modern music, where artists build communities and experiences around their work.

Carrying Kenya Onto Global Platforms

Nikita has performed at the BBC 1Xtra Afrobeats Concerto in London, appeared on Coke Studio Africa and participated in a campaign connected to Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

She has also represented East African women through Spotify’s EQUAL Africa initiative.

Each platform has allowed her to introduce her voice to new audiences while maintaining a musical identity shaped by Kenya and the wider African continent.

Her growing live presence remains equally important. In September 2026, she joined artists including Xenia Manasseh, Njerae and Bridget Blue on the lineup for Nairobi’s Peaches & Cream event—part of an exciting generation of women strengthening Kenya’s contemporary music scene.

Excellence That Continues to Grow

At Sisi Kenya Media, we celebrate Kenyans whose talent is matched by the discipline required to keep developing it.

Nikita Kering’ represents young Kenyan excellence maturing in public.

Audiences first met her as a child with an extraordinary voice. Today, she is an award-winning performer, thoughtful songwriter and increasingly self-directed creative entrepreneur.

She has grown through every chapter without losing the emotional quality that first made listeners pay attention.

Nikita’s journey reminds young creatives that being gifted may open the first door—but lasting impact comes from continuing to learn, experiment and find the courage to become more fully yourself.
