The founder of SHOFCO turned his experiences growing up in Kibera into a grassroots movement providing education, clean water, healthcare and economic opportunity across Kenya.
Kennedy Odede grew up understanding both the hardships and the strength found within Kibera.
Life in the Nairobi community exposed him to poverty, limited services and lost opportunities. Yet it also showed him something equally powerful: neighbours supporting one another, young people organizing around shared needs and families finding ways to move forward together.
That community spirit became the foundation of Shining Hope for Communities, widely known as SHOFCO.
Kennedy founded the organization in 2004 with a small amount of money and a belief that residents of informal settlements should be trusted to identify and lead their own solutions.
Beginning With What He Had
SHOFCO did not begin as a large institution with extensive resources.
It grew from Kennedy’s desire to improve conditions in the same community that had shaped him. He began by organizing local activities and bringing residents together around the issues affecting their daily lives.
His approach challenged the belief that solutions must always arrive from outside.
Kennedy believed that communities already understood their greatest needs. What they often lacked were resources, infrastructure and a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their future.
That belief remains central to SHOFCO: lasting change becomes possible when residents are treated as leaders rather than passive recipients of assistance.
Education as a Path to Freedom
Education became one of SHOFCO’s earliest priorities.
The organization opened the Kibera School for Girls, providing tuition-free education and wider support to girls who might otherwise face barriers to remaining in school.
The school became part of a broader model linking education with healthcare, clean water, family support and community development.
For Kennedy, educating girls creates change that reaches far beyond one classroom. A girl who receives a quality education gains greater opportunities to build a career, support her family and participate in decisions shaping her community.
SHOFCO has continued expanding its educational work through schools, libraries, scholarships, vocational training and employment-readiness programs.
Clean Water, Healthcare and Economic Opportunity
SHOFCO’s programs address several interconnected community needs.
Its clean-water systems help residents access safer water closer to home. Health facilities provide essential services, while vocational programs equip young people with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
Women also receive business training, financial support and opportunities to participate in savings and community-leadership groups.
The organization’s model recognizes that poverty cannot be addressed through one service alone. A child may need education, but the family may also need healthcare, water and a stable source of income.
By connecting these services, SHOFCO helps individuals and families build stronger foundations for long-term progress.
Today, the organization describes itself as a leading community-based movement mobilizing social groups and delivering needs-driven services across Kenya.
Recognition for Community-Led Change
Kennedy’s work has received recognition in Kenya and internationally.
In 2024, he was named to the TIME100 list of influential people. In 2025, he became the first Kenyan recipient of the United Nations Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize, an honour recognizing service to humanity.
These recognitions have brought international attention to his leadership, but the heart of his work remains within the communities SHOFCO serves.
His greatest achievement is not simply creating a successful organization. It is helping build structures through which residents can organize, advocate for themselves and participate in shaping their own future.
Building Power From Within
At Sisi Kenya Media, we celebrate changemakers who understand that strong communities are not built for people—they are built with them.
Kennedy Odede’s journey from Kibera to international recognition demonstrates what can happen when lived experience is transformed into purposeful leadership.
He began with limited resources, but he possessed something equally valuable: an understanding of his community, trust among its residents and a belief in their ability to create change.
Today, SHOFCO is supporting education, healthcare, clean water, employment and women’s empowerment across Kenya.
Kennedy’s story reminds us that meaningful transformation does not always begin in government offices, conference halls or large institutions.
Sometimes, it begins with one person looking at the place they call home and deciding that its people deserve greater opportunity—and that they already possess the power to help build it.
