Rose Gakuo: Turning Communication Into a Voice for Civic Understanding

—

From university leadership and television journalism to government communication and political analysis, Rose Gakuo has built a career around helping Kenyans understand public affairs.

Rose Gakuo’s professional journey has taken her from student politics to television studios, government offices and national public forums.

Across those different environments, one quality has remained constant: her ability to communicate.

Today, Gakuo is recognized as a Kenyan governance expert, civic educator, social-political analyst and communications professional. Her experience in journalism and public service gives her a valuable perspective on how leadership decisions are made, communicated and understood by citizens.

Leadership That Began on Campus

Gakuo studied Communication and Media at Laikipia University, graduating with First Class Honours in 2015.

Her university experience extended well beyond the classroom. She became actively involved in student affairs and was elected president of the Laikipia University Students’ Association, emerging as one of the pioneering women to lead a students’ union at a Kenyan public university.

The position required more than delivering speeches or representing students during formal meetings. It meant responding to real concerns, helping classmates navigate difficult situations and remaining available during emergencies.

Gakuo has recalled accompanying students to hospital late at night while continuing to protect the academic performance that eventually earned her first-class honours.

She later served in the Kenya University Students Organisation, expanding her leadership experience from one campus to the national student community.

Those years introduced her to representation, negotiation and public responsibility—skills that would become increasingly important throughout her career.

Finding Her Place in Broadcasting

After university, Gakuo became a finalist in the second season of KTN’s television talent-search programme, The Presenter.

The experience helped introduce her to a wider audience and opened new possibilities within professional broadcasting.

She subsequently joined the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation as a reporter and news anchor. Her work required her to interview guests, report from the field and translate complex developments into information viewers could understand.

In 2019, she moved to K24 Television, continuing to develop her profile as a journalist and media personality.

Television strengthened her confidence before national audiences, but it also taught her the importance of preparation, accuracy and asking the questions that matter to ordinary people.

Those lessons would remain useful when her career moved from reporting on public institutions to communicating from within them.

From Journalism to Public Service

In 2020, Gakuo joined the Nairobi Metropolitan Services as head of public relations and stakeholder engagement.

The role placed her at the centre of communication between a major public institution, the media and Nairobi residents.

Her responsibilities included developing communication strategies, promoting public initiatives, engaging stakeholders and helping the institution explain its work to the people it served.

The transition gave Gakuo a different view of government. As a journalist, she had examined institutions from the outside. At NMS, she gained experience in the internal work required to communicate public programmes, manage institutional reputation and respond to public expectations.

Her wider public-service journey has also included work associated with the Office of the President and the Office of the Deputy President. She has appeared at political and public engagements as a communications professional, moderator and master of ceremonies.

Making Governance Easier to Understand

Gakuo now publicly identifies as a governance expert, civic educator and social-political analyst.

These roles bring together the different parts of her professional journey.

She understands the media’s responsibility to question public officials. She has experienced the demands of communicating on behalf of government institutions. Her background in student politics also gives her firsthand knowledge of campaigning, representation and responding to the needs of a constituency.

Through commentary and civic education, Gakuo helps audiences understand political institutions, leadership and the role citizens play in a democratic society.

Civic education extends far beyond explaining how to vote. It helps people understand how government works, why public decisions matter and how citizens can participate constructively in shaping their communities.

By presenting public affairs in accessible language, communicators such as Gakuo can help narrow the distance between institutions and the people they exist to serve.

A Woman Building Influence Across Institutions

Rose Gakuo’s career has not followed a single straight path.

She has been a student leader, television journalist, public-relations executive, government communicator, event moderator and political analyst. Rather than appearing disconnected, these roles reveal a consistent commitment to public communication.

Each chapter has prepared her for the next.

Student leadership taught her how to represent people. Journalism strengthened her ability to investigate and explain. Public relations introduced her to institutional strategy and stakeholder engagement. Civic education now allows her to combine those lessons for a wider public purpose.

Her growing digital platform has further expanded her reach, enabling her to share civic information, professional insights and commentary with thousands of followers.

Why Rose Gakuo’s Story Matters

Rose Gakuo represents a generation of Kenyan women confidently entering spaces that have historically offered them limited visibility.

Her journey demonstrates that leadership can begin in a university meeting room and grow into a career influencing national conversations.

It also shows the value of adaptability. Gakuo has moved between sectors without abandoning the skills and principles that shaped her earliest leadership experiences.

At Sisi Kenya Media, we celebrate Kenyans whose work helps people feel more informed, represented and connected to the country’s story.

Rose Gakuo is contributing to that mission by using communication to make governance more understandable and civic participation more accessible.

She began by representing students. Today, she is helping a much wider audience understand the leadership decisions shaping Kenya—and the important role citizens can play in the nation’s future.
