Peter Nduati: The Serial Entrepreneur Building Across Business and Creativity

—

From pioneering specialized medical insurance to supporting music, events and emerging businesses, the Kenyan entrepreneur has built a career around opportunity, reinvention and purposeful leadership.

Peter Nduati’s entrepreneurial journey has never been confined to one industry.

Over more than three decades, he has built businesses and supported initiatives across insurance, financial services, consulting, entertainment, events and enterprise development.

He is best known as the founder of Resolution Health East Africa, a company that became Kenya’s first registered specialized Medical Insurance Provider. His wider business interests include Peter Nduati Consulting, Peter Nduati Group, True Blaq Group, Pine Creek Records and TB Distributors.

His story is not simply about the companies he has established. It is also about learning from failure, rebuilding with greater discipline and using experience to help other African entrepreneurs grow.

An Entrepreneurial Beginning in Dagoretti

Peter grew up in Dagoretti, Nairobi, in a family of six raised by a single mother.

He attended Dagoretti High School before travelling to India to study economics at Panjab University. He later completed professional insurance training and an Advanced Management Programme at Strathmore Business School.

His entrepreneurial instincts appeared early.

In his twenties, Peter established a boutique and developed an innovative arrangement to provide clothing and makeup for television news anchors. The exposure helped the business grow, and he says he made his first million shillings at 24.

The success, however, was short-lived.

Limited financial discipline and uncontrolled spending contributed to the collapse of the business. By 26, he had lost the money and found himself in debt.

Peter has spoken openly about that experience because it taught him an important lesson: making money and building a sustainable business are not the same thing.

A company needs structure, financial controls and disciplined leadership if its success is to last.

Pioneering Specialized Medical Insurance

Peter later built a professional career in insurance, including serving as general manager at AAR Insurance.

While working in the industry, he identified gaps in the medical products available to Kenyan families. He believed the market needed more flexible healthcare coverage that addressed outpatient treatment, maternity care, women’s health and other important needs.

When his ideas were not fully adopted, he decided to create a company around them.

In 2002, Peter founded Resolution Health East Africa, raising capital from relatives, friends and angel investors.

The company entered an area that was not yet clearly defined within Kenya’s regulatory system. Peter worked with the relevant authorities to establish a formal category for specialized medical-insurance providers.

Resolution received its licence in 2003, becoming Kenya’s first registered Medical Insurance Provider.

The achievement demonstrated that entrepreneurship does not always mean competing within an existing market. Sometimes it means helping create an entirely new category.

Building With a Regional Vision

Peter envisioned Resolution as an East African company from the beginning.

It eventually expanded beyond Kenya into Tanzania, Uganda and South Sudan. The business also grew beyond specialized medical coverage to include motor, property, travel and other general-insurance products.

In 2013, Resolution Health became Resolution Insurance, reflecting its broader range of services.

That same year, Peter was named East African Entrepreneur of the Year during the regional All Africa Business Leaders Awards.

He later sold majority control of the company to new investors while retaining a minority interest and continuing for a period as group chief executive.

Resolution subsequently encountered financial difficulties and was placed under statutory management in 2022. For Peter, that chapter became another source of difficult but valuable entrepreneurial lessons—particularly about ownership transitions, governance and the structures companies need when expanding.

Helping Other Businesses Build and Scale

Peter now applies the lessons accumulated throughout his career through Peter Nduati Consulting.

The advisory firm helps African organizations address areas such as:

  • Business strategy and transformation
  • Capital raising and investment readiness
  • Corporate governance
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Leadership development
  • Market expansion
  • Organizational culture
  • Executive communication

His approach emphasizes building the systems required to support sustainable growth.

A promising idea may attract customers and investors, but a company also needs dependable financial controls, capable leadership and clear governance if it is to survive beyond its founder.

Opening the Boardroom Through Conversation

Peter has also developed The Chairman’s Chronicles, a leadership and business platform exploring conversations that often remain behind boardroom doors.

The platform addresses entrepreneurship, investment, corporate governance, resilience, business structure and the realities of scaling a company.

By discussing both success and failure, Peter gives emerging founders access to lessons that are often learned only after expensive mistakes.

His willingness to examine difficult chapters makes his mentorship especially valuable. He does not present entrepreneurship as a predictable journey from one achievement to another. He presents it as a process of learning, adjusting and rebuilding.

Investing in Kenya’s Creative Economy

Peter’s interests extend beyond insurance and consulting.

As chairman of True Blaq Group, he has supported work in events, experiential marketing, brand engagement and creative production.

He also entered Kenya’s music industry through Pine Creek Records, which has worked with artists including Atemi Oyungu, Anto Neo-Soul, Didge, Nikii and Mr Lenny.

One of the label’s notable projects was Pass the Mic: The Les Wanyika Project, which brought contemporary performers and producers together to reinterpret music associated with the celebrated Les Wanyika band.

The project helped preserve an important part of Kenyan musical heritage while introducing it to younger audiences through modern production.

Peter’s creative investments demonstrate that culture and business do not have to exist separately. Creative industries can be supported with the same strategic thinking, patience and structure applied to other enterprises.

Turning Experience Into Opportunity for Others

Through the Peter Nduati Foundation, Peter supports initiatives involving education, health and social justice, with particular attention to boys and young men.

He also participates in entrepreneurship forums, leadership discussions and mentoring programmes where he shares lessons about bootstrapping, raising capital, managing investors and separating a founder’s personal identity from the company.

Several principles consistently appear throughout his work:

  • Begin with a large vision, even when starting small.
  • Treat regulation as a source of credibility and trust.
  • Establish strong structures before attempting rapid expansion.
  • Study failure until it becomes useful knowledge.
  • Approach creative industries with both passion and commercial discipline.

The Entrepreneur Who Kept Building

Peter Nduati made his first million at 24 and lost it by 26. He could have allowed that failure to define his entrepreneurial future.

Instead, he rebuilt.

He entered the insurance industry, pioneered a new category of medical coverage, expanded a Kenyan company across East Africa and later diversified into consulting, entertainment, music and mentorship.

At Sisi Kenya Media, we celebrate entrepreneurs whose journeys reveal the complete meaning of building—the ideas, achievements, setbacks and reinventions.

Peter Nduati’s story reminds us that entrepreneurship is not defined by never falling. It is defined by what a person learns, how they rise and whether they use that experience to build more wisely the next time.
