The broadcaster, comedian and educator has transformed his gift for language and storytelling into a remarkable career in media, diplomacy and international communication.
For many Kenyans, Larry Asego will always be remembered as the warm, humorous voice that entertained listeners on Kiss 100 and Classic 105.
Yet radio represents only one chapter of an extraordinary professional journey.
Larry has worked as a French teacher, comedian, actor, broadcaster, photographer, diplomatic adviser and international communications officer. Across each role, one quality has remained constant: his ability to use language to inform, entertain and connect people.
A Journey That Began in Kibera
Larry grew up in Nairobi’s Kibera area and attended Olympic Primary School before joining Highway Secondary School.
It was there that he made a decision that would influence much of his future: he began studying French.
During school holidays, his father enrolled him in additional lessons at Alliance Française Nairobi. What began as a school subject gradually became a doorway into education, broadcasting and international diplomacy.
Larry later earned a Bachelor of Education in French and Linguistics from the University of Nairobi. He subsequently completed a master’s degree in International Conflict Management and pursued further doctoral studies.
After graduating, he returned to Alliance Française—not as a student, but as a French teacher.
Becoming One of Kenya’s Familiar Radio Voices
Larry’s ability to communicate naturally with people eventually carried him into broadcasting.
Encouraged by comedian Daniel “Churchill” Ndambuki, he joined Kiss 100 before moving to Classic 105. Over approximately a decade with Radio Africa Group, he hosted breakfast, mid-morning and evening programs, including Larry, Nick and Friends.
His relaxed presentation style and observational humor helped him connect with listeners.
Larry could take ordinary experiences—relationships, Nairobi transport, family life or the pressures of adulthood—and turn them into entertaining conversations that felt personal and familiar.
In 2016, he was named Radio Personality of the Year at the KenyaBuzz People’s Choice Awards, recognizing the strong relationship he had built with Kenyan audiences.
From Radio to Diplomacy
In 2017, Larry took another significant step, leaving full-time radio to join the Embassy of France in Kenya and Somalia.
During more than seven years in diplomatic communications, he served in roles that included press and communications counsellor, head of the Press and Communications Office and special adviser to the French ambassador.
The transition brought together nearly every part of his earlier journey.
His French-language training helped him work across cultures. Teaching had prepared him to explain complex ideas clearly. Radio had taught him how to understand audiences, while performance gave him the confidence to communicate in demanding public settings.
In 2024, Larry joined the United Nations Office of the Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region as a communications officer.
His current professional biography identifies him as a temporary communications officer with the Convention on Wetlands Secretariat, where his skills now support international environmental communication and conservation efforts.
Returning to the Comedy Stage
Even as his diplomatic career expanded, Larry never abandoned comedy.
In December 2025, he returned to Alliance Française Nairobi with his one-man stand-up special, ’Til Age Do Us Apart.
The performance explored childhood, parenting, relationships, ageing, bills and the unexpected responsibilities of adulthood.
Returning to the same institution where he had once studied and taught French gave the show additional meaning. Alliance Française had helped shape his journey, and years later, it became the stage on which he shared everything life had taught him.
His comedy is grounded in observation rather than exaggeration. He finds laughter inside experiences many people recognize but rarely pause to examine.
Finding Beauty Behind the Camera
Larry is also an award-winning photographer with a strong interest in wildlife and macro photography.
His work has included exhibitions highlighting insects and other frequently overlooked parts of nature. Through detailed images, he encourages audiences to recognize the beauty and ecological importance of even the smallest creatures.
This passion connects naturally with his current environmental-communications work. Whether using a microphone, diplomatic message or camera lens, Larry helps people notice stories they might otherwise overlook.
Refusing to Be Defined by One Career
At Sisi Kenya Media, we celebrate Kenyans whose journeys demonstrate the power of curiosity and continuous growth.
Larry Asego’s story shows that a person does not have to remain confined to one professional identity.
A French class became a teaching career. Teaching supported his growth as a communicator. Comedy opened the door to radio. Broadcasting prepared him for diplomacy, while photography strengthened his connection with conservation.
From Kibera to Kenya’s airwaves and international institutions, Larry has continued to learn, adapt and carry his distinctly Kenyan voice into new spaces.
His journey reminds us that our talents do not always lead to one destination. Sometimes, they become bridges to possibilities we could never have imagined at the beginning.
