President William Ruto has conveyed his sympathy to the family of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga following the passing of his sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga.
Ruto hailed Beryl as “a pioneer whose impressive professional career took her across Africa, from Kenya to Zimbabwe.”
According to the President’s statement, Beryl distinguished herself in the 1980s as an outstanding urban planner in Zimbabwe, where her skill and dedication helped shape significant urban development projects.
He added that Beryl later served “with integrity” as the Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company from 2020, where she pushed for reforms that strengthened the institution and enhanced service delivery.
“We grieve the loss of a brilliant mind and a groundbreaking woman who paved the way for many others. On my behalf and on behalf of all Kenyans, I extend sincere condolences to the family of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga as we mourn Beryl,” he said.
Kanu chairman Gideon Moi also expressed his sympathies, praising Beryl as a committed professional who had worked as both a teacher and a lawyer, and who demonstrated dedication in public service, including at Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.
“Our thoughts are with the entire Odinga family,” Moi said, assuring them of support during this painful period.
ODM secretary general and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna likewise offered his condolences, noting that the party stands with the family.
“It has been an extremely difficult few days, but we are here to support you,” he said.
Beryl, the younger sister of Raila Odinga, passed away while undergoing treatment, the family said.
Although she stayed away from active politics, one of her daughters, Ami Ambala, serves as a nominated member of the Nairobi County Assembly under the ODM banner.
Ruth Odinga earlier confirmed the news, saying the family was heartbroken.
“With great sadness, but submitting to God’s will, we announce the sudden death of Beryl Achieng Odinga,” she said.
Ruth remembered Beryl as a devoted parent and a strong presence within the family.
“Beryl was a caring mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taure,” she said. “She was sister to Senator Oburu Oginga, Rt Hon Raila Odinga, Akinyi Wenwa, and myself, among others.”
She also recognized the extended family members mourning the loss, saying: “She was sister-in-law to Dr Anne Oburu, Dr Canon Ida Odinga, Hon Tabu Osewe, and Judy Oburu.”
Ruth noted that even in their sorrow, the family was drawing strength from their faith.
“Though we are deeply pained by her passing and the huge void she leaves behind, we find comfort in believing she now rests in the Lord’s embrace,” she said.
“We remain grateful for the precious time we shared with her and for the significant influence she had on everyone who knew her.”
